The Kevin Voldness Band In Spring 1994 Synthia was playing a teen club in Rapid City, SD with an Alternative/New Wave band. During a break, she popped into the over-21 club next door for a quick beer. There was a used-car-salesman-looking fool at the bar, not bad-looking, but real lounge-lizardy. Being in the mood to harass someone, she bought him a beer. Which she had to talk him into accepting. She asked him if he was a guitar player. When he said yes, she decided to see what he had. The band were friends of hers, so she asked them to call him up. Didn't mention it to him, though. When they called him up, he was reluctant, but went. They started with Johnny B. Goode, which he played well. Then they started another song. "All Along The Watchtower" . It turns out that the "car salesman" was actually Kevin Voldness, Midwest Hired Gun, 30+ year Guitar Monster, former Hendrix impersonator, and founder of The Kid Band. On extended hiatus. Well. After "Watchtower", they hooked up, and a few weeks later she placed an ad in the local paper for a band, again without telling Kevin. He was reluctant, but they formed a band and worked up a few of his songs. The results, although rough, were encouraging enough to lure him back to the business. They tried to put a band together in Rapid City, but couldn't find players willing to risk an all-original show. A couple of financial setbacks got in the way, not to mention some back problems for Kevin and a torn ACL for Synthia, and they'd had all they wanted of the Midwest. They finally loaded up the truck and they moved to Beverly (San Bernardino, actually), where they once again started searching for the right players. Three years later there is still no band; apparently the standards are too tough, the music too different, or the goals too high for the players they've met so far. Meanwhile, Kevin and Synthia continue to work on their music, record an album, and are currently performing as a duo accompanied by Kevin on his 12-string. The album is aptly titled: |
